Back to School: Tips to Thrive, Not Just Survive

The back-to-school season is here! This time of transition brings excitement, stress, and (let’s be honest) a little chaos. Between shopping for supplies, adjusting to new schedules, and managing those first-day jitters, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. My kids are heading back to school. As a parent, I know this time of transition comes with mixed emotions.

It is so natural to begin the loop of questioning: was it a well-lived summer? Did we have enough planned to keep the kids busy and enriched during their time off. Did I fit in enough visits with my loved ones? We make comparisons to others around us who may have had robust summer plans with trips, camps, family adventures….they seem to do it all, right?

Fast forward just a few weeks and, here we are, planning for the return to school, counting down the days until we can establish some type of routine again. Each year, especially as my children get older, I work hard to be mindful in embracing this time of renewal, excitement, and uncertainty.

Last night, heading to Back To School Night, I noted the common interaction of the almost automatic, “did you do anything fun this summer?” My sassy mom instinct wanted to at times say, “we did! we survived!”  The reality is that this family of mine was able to have a summer with full permission to revive and thrive. We made big decisions, sat in the discomfort of transitions, celebrated achievements, and made space and time for each other a priority. I also gave myself permission to make space and time for myself a priority (what?!?)

So here we are, the only non-negotiable is to continue to revive and thrive. You’re probably thinking, “sure, ok,” as mornings can feel like survival mode to just get out the door on time with matching shoes on. Oh, you thought I was talking about the kids…yes, they should have matching shoes, too, says the mom who has had her shirt on inside AND backwards at the Pre-k drop-off line.

How will You Revive and Thrive This School Year

So how do we shift from survival mode to actually thriving during the school year? It starts with three intentional steps: Stop, Reflect, and Reset.

1. Stop

With the busyness of back-to-school mornings, take intentional pauses. Even 30–60 seconds of stillness in the car after drop-off can reset your mindset. Schedule non-negotiable breaks in your day — even a set time for lunch — to create space for yourself.

2. Reflect

Routine can turn life into a checklist. Instead, notice the small wins: your child’s growing independence, a family dinner together, or simply making it through a tough day. Ask yourself: What doors are opening? Which ones have closed?

Celebrate accomplishments, no matter how small. Reflection turns the everyday into something meaningful.

3. Reset

Each day is a chance to start fresh. Give yourself permission to be imperfect — your kids need to see that being human is okay. Lead by example: ask your children about the best part of their day and what they’re looking forward to tomorrow. These conversations build resilience and connection.

Each day is an opportunity to stop, reflect and rest for tomorrow to revive and thrive, as we embrace all of the renewal, excitement, and uncertainty of the year ahead.
